STUDIE WISSELOORD

REFLECTIONS - SEMESTER 1

Hey there!

My reflections for this first semester at Wisseloord are:

  • Small reflections linked per track or class assignment

  • I also wrote an overall reflection for this semester :)

Ciao, Valentina

SELFSTUDY - 'De Maan en De Zon'

26 september 2024

The assignment

I wrote a song for my friend who lost her baby. I wanted to make a studio version for her.

Learnings

  • ???

What I want to learn

  • So I wrote this song, I recorded it, I produced it, but I get stuck in the mixing part. What to do next? What are the steps? What should I listen for?

DAW CLASS 1 - chord progression 'Ik ben zenuwachtig

28 september 2024

The assignment

Make a track in D-minor with this chord progression: 1-6-5-7.

Learnings

  • That I am pretty easily daunted by things I don't know yet, but that when I have some solo-time to figure it out on my own pace that it's very inspiring.

  • Music theory! I want to learn more about this, cause it can come in super handy.

  • A different way of writing. Normally I write from the inside out. I grab my guitar and intuitively I start writing. Now it was the other way around: the frame was already there (the chord progression) and afterwards I had to connect myself to it. It was new for me and different but it was refreshing!

What I want to learn

  • How to mix this track better.

DAW CLASS 2 - three samples track

5 oktober 2024

The assignment

Make a track only using 3 samples.

Learnings

  • More ways of how to manipulate samples in my DAW

  • You don't always have to know all the details of a knob you tweak in your DAW. Tweaking and listening is also a way.

What I want to learn

  • Study more on adsr and the basics of sounds. What are the basics of a kick? A snare? Etc.

DAW CLASS 3 - synthesis assignment 1

19 oktober 2024

The assignment

Make a beat only using synthesis.

Learnings

  • I never did anything related to synthesis, so this class was pretty overwhelming. But also an eyeopener: I can do só much more with my DAW than I thought.

  • I learned more about the basics of sounds and adsr.

What I want to learn

  • I want to learn more about adsr and practice more with sounddesign so hopefully soon I can start adding my flavour to it.

SELFSTUDY - 'Winter'

21 november 2024

The assignment

I wrote a track about the winter and produced it.

Learnings

  • Template & grouping: I just had a mixing class from Davide about templates and grouping your tracks. I already did this a bit, but this time I went full send. It was insane how much of a better workflow it created!

  • Chain selector in Audio Effect Rack (Ableton): in the same class Davide talked about parallel compression and using the chains in Ableton for this. I actually used it for all my reverbs and fx. It gave me a totally different (and more visually insightful) way to blend all the fx to my liking.

  • Percussion: I've been inspired by a lot of classmates who make electronic music. So when I heard this track could use some percussion I dove in. Percussion is pretty new to me, so I used some samples and focussed on the arrangement and mix of the sounds. It was a delight! I loooove it!

What I want to learn

  • Im already much more happy with the pre-mix, but I again feel stuck on this specific point: what next considering mixing? I don't know the steps + my ear isn't trained yet mixing wise so I feel like Im looking for something I can't see yet.

MIX CLASS 4 - mix piano + vocals

9 november 2024

The assignment

Mix piano + vocals (NUMAH) only using the stems, eq & compression.

Learnings

  • A track pretty similar to my own genre was a good mixing practice.

  • This was the first time I mixed a track after I properly learned about compression (in the DAW class with Yori). For the first time it didn't feel that overwhelming: I could take the steps I learned and I actually knew a bit about what I was doing with the compressor instead of just turning knobs.

  • The day after Davide's feedback on my mix I noticed the lack of low end and the 'mix-color' he spoke about. Learning: let a mix go for a day or two and I'll hear things better.

What I want to learn

  • Im actually pretty proud of pushing through this annoying (I know I want it to sound better but I don't know how) stage and feeling a bit more traction for the first time. I just need to practice practice practice.

REFLECTIONS

It was fun and insightful to put all these assignments and tracks in a chronillogical order. It gives me insight on what Im learning, inspired by and what I still want to learn.

PRO'S ABOUT THIS SEMESTER

  • Learning synthesis: I was really overwhelmed by this at the beginning cause I didn’t even knew what adsr meant… but I had an afternoon with one of my classmates (Jeroen) and he explained me step by step how Vital works and a whole fucking world opened up for me. It’s funny to notice how to different genre’s (hardstyle and acoustic folk) can have same elements, like: creating all the sounds yourself from scratch. So Im really looking forward to getting more handy with Vital, so I can make my own kick for my acoustic folk tracks when needed.

  • Connection: I start to connect with people in my class and that feels really good since I never did a music study and I don’t have a lot of music friends (this sounds sad haha).

  • Inspiration: in the beginning I was a bit hesitant, being surrounded by people who mostly make electronic music. But looking back I see I really get inspired by all the differences in genre, skill, etc. I even started with something I wanted to do for a long time: make a drum n bass track.

  • Good communication with the Malik. I really appreciate the good and close contact. It feels as a good balance between doing your own thing and being ‘watched’ (I mean that in a good way). Some ‘monitoring’ in relation to us as students.

CONS ABOUT THIS SEMESTER

  • Less energyDuring this semester I had my album release + release show. After 1,5 year of pushing this I was really exhausted so I had less time/energy to work with everything I learned and selfstudy.

  • Processing information in classes: I have had some trouble processing the information in the classes. I think it has to do with 3 things:

  1. Auditory processing disored and learning style: this is the first time in a while Im back in ‘school’ and I really notice the effects of my APD. A lot of the times in class I can’t decode the words of the teacher or I only process a sentence 5 seconds after it is said. It’s really annoying and frustrating: I don’t want to cause delay for my classmated and at the same time I really really want to learn as much as possible.. Visual teaching would help processing the information, since I have way less trouble reading information.

  2. My level in skill: Im still not sure if Im in the right class considering my level and understanding of music production... some things are completely new to me and I feel like maybe my tempo is holding my classmates back.

  3. Teaching/pedagogy of the classes: Ive noticed as a teacher myself, that sometimes I miss some basics of didactic/pedagogy in the classes. Basic things like a visual agenda/time schedule, goals for the class, time management, interactive reflection, differentiation.

I think it’s super valuable to have an amazing producer/sound engineer leading a class with so much knowledge, skill and experience. At the same time I sometimes feel that knowledge doesn’t always come through. When I look at the most basic teaching styles (visual, auditory, read/write, and kinaesthetic) I see some of them are used, but most methods are ‘Talking about theory’ (mostly auditorial) or an assignment we have to do individually. It doesn’t have to be much! I already would really profit from more visual tools during class. And I think more students would benefit from this. All the classmates I talked to or befriended are neurodivergent, have a short attention span and probably learn quite visually.

FOCUS FOR 2ND SEMESTER

  • Mixing: I want to be able to fully mix my own track. I feel so depended of people right now, that's why I started this study. But right now I do not yet feel like I received the tools to (from me level) work up to learning how to mix. For starters I really like to know where Im at when it comes to my mixing.

  • Ear training: Im not sure what is most efficient, but I have the feeling ear training could help me gain more 'sight' as a mixer. Curious about what you guys think about this. What approach would be best?

  • Synthesis/sounddesign: I want to keep practice and learn making basic kicks, snares and more in Vital.

  • Music theory: I want to teach myself the basics of music theory. This comes last because I will be mostly busy with the above, but when I find the time and energy this year I will give it to music theory.

That was it!
Thank you for reading :)
